MODALS

We use modals be fore other verbs. I can play tennis. Modals are followed by the base form of the verb. They do not change form to agree with the subject

He plays tennis. He can play tennis.

They play tennis. They can play tennis

can	· ability · informal request	I can run fast. Can I use your phone?
could	· past ability · polite request	Could I use your phone?	I could run very fast when I was young
should	· advice	You should see a doctor.
must	· necessity · negative (wrong thing to do)	You must do the exam. You must not eat in class.

Examples:

I can speak Italian. (ability)

I could ride a bicycle when I was a kid. (past ability)

It’s a good film. You should see it. (advice)

You must call the doctor. (necessity)

You must not be late for your exam. (wrong thing to do)
